Q & A With Mike
Q: How did you decide to get in your line of work?
A: I started training clients in my martial arts studio because I came across a lot of people who wanted to combine fitness training with martial arts. I found it helped my clients alleviate boredom and that the ones who did it regularly got results much faster. So, I kept doing it, and eventually the workouts I’d developed became the basis for the Fighting Fit Boot Camp and Kickboxing classes.
Q: Why does your workout stand out from others who do what you do?
A: You’ll be trained by highly experienced instructors in small group classes. That means you’ll get expert individualized attention in every single class.
In addition, the program itself is very unique. A lot of the martial arts fitness programs that have cropped up since I created Fighting Fit are just “MMA light”, but that’s really not what we’re about. Instead, I’ve taken the fitness aspects of martial arts training that work best for dropping weight, and combined them with sound exercise science and healthy eating habits. To my knowledge, I was the first person to combine all three elements into a single program.
Last and most importantly, I’ve actually struggled with my weight so I know what my clients are going through. After being a life-long athlete, about six or seven years ago I developed a chronic auto-immune disorder (rheumatoid arthritis). Due to the illness, I went from working out from 1.5 to 3 hours a day to sleeping 14 hours a day and working out maybe once a week.
As you might imagine, I gained a ton of weight and ballooned up to about 50 pounds over my “fit” weight. It was embarrassing, to say the least. The tipping point was when a client gave me a portrait they made of me as a present, and another client commented, “At least they could have left off the double-chin.” Ouch!
So, I started slowly changing my eating habits and working my way back into health. I learned how to eat when you have metabolism issues and autoimmune issues, and I started learning how to get more done in less time in my workouts, since two-hour workouts were out the window with the RA.
Those workouts and the eating program I followed allowed me to lose 35 pounds over three months, and became the foundation for the Fighting Fit workouts and nutrition program.
Prior to that experience, I never understood what my clients were going through when they struggled with weight loss. Now, I know what they’re going through and how to help them.
I think that being able to empathize with people who aren’t natural athletes or who are facing health challenges makes us stand out from other programs that are taught by trainers who have never had those experiences. Nothing against those trainers, but until you’ve lived it you just don’t know how hard it is.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I enjoy seeing people reach their weight loss and fitness goals. It’s extremely rewarding to see people come in with goals they haven’t been able to reach, then show them how to reach their fitness goals in just a few months time.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What’s your answer?
“What do you think about ‘X’ diet?” And, my pat answer is that fad diets are always going to result in yo-yo dieting and rebound weight loss… then I introduce them to a more balanced and healthy approach to eating for weight loss. It works with 100% of the clients who stick with it.
Q: What advice do you have for someone looking to hire a fitness trainer?
Find a trainer or fitness instructor that you can relate to. Someone who has never struggled with their weight or overcome health issues to lose weight has no idea what the average person is going through. So, look for an instructor who can empathize with your situation, because they’ll be a better fit for you overall.
